Carlos Acosta Receives Lord Mayor of Birmingham Award

Carlos Acosta, Director of the Birmingham Royal Ballet (BRB) and Cuban-born dancer, was honored with a Lord Mayor’s Award, a distinction that celebrates outstanding contributions to the city, the dancer announced on his Facebook profile.

“I feel deeply honored that both the BRB and I have been granted this recognition; we had the privilege of receiving awards for our contribution to Birmingham at the Lord Mayor’s inauguration event,” Acosta stated.

In his acceptance speech, the BRB director expressed his gratitude for the Mayor’s support of the company.

“I would like to thank former Lord Mayor Councillor Ken Wood on behalf of everyone at BRB for the two awards recognizing our company’s contribution to the people of this great city and for promoting Birmingham throughout the UK and abroad,” he remarked.

“I would also like to thank him for his extraordinary support over the past year and for his keen interest in all the work we do on stage and within our communities,” he added.

“I am proud that the BRB has been acknowledged as part of this legacy,” the Cuban dancer affirmed.

He took the opportunity to warmly welcome the incoming Lord Mayor Councillor Zafar Iqbal and Mayor Farooq Akhtar.

The Lord Mayor’s Award is a distinction that recognizes outstanding achievements or exceptional service to the city and its residents. It is not given merely for good work or reaching a certain level, but rather honors those who have gone above and beyond.

Similarly, it is awarded for enhancing Birmingham’s reputation or public perception, making a significant difference, or improving the lives of many people in the city.

It also recognizes exemplary selfless service to this English city and its citizens, as well as demonstrating great moral courage and loyalty to Birmingham and its people.
